Honda’s capable middleweight V twin

I had never heard of the Honda NV400 until someone contacted our Facebook page who had one in Ireland.

A quick bit of research on Google led me to details of the 400cc version of our VT500 that seems to have been produced for a couple of years solely for the Japanese market to suit their tax or insurance laws.

Over time they seems to have travelled throughout the world via the ‘grey market’ finding homes from New Zealand to Norway and many other countries in between although their small numbers always make them a bit of a ‘mystery bike’.

The 400 engine shares the same 71cm bore but has the stroke reduced from 61 to 50.4cm. Externally the ‘SP’ looks identical to the ‘E’ model in the VT500 range.

There was also a custom model produced but no equivalent Ascot as that was purely for the US market.

Huge thanks to Michael Gregor for access to these images from his collection
